The Pan African Writers Association ( PAWA) has sent a letter of solidarity to the peoples and governments of Nepal and Tibet over the recent devastating floods in the two countries and regions.
In a release jointly signed by the PAWA President, Prof Bill Ndi and the Secretary General, Dr Wale Okediran, PAWA extended the Association’s deepest condolences to all who have suffered loss, displacement, and anguish as a result of the devastating flash floods that have swept through the countries and regions.
“Across the vast mountains and valleys that have long cradled your civilizations, lives have been tragically interrupted, families separated, homes destroyed, and cherished dreams washed away by the merciless force of nature.
Today, as writers, storytellers, and guardians of memory from across Africa and its diaspora, we join the global community in mourning with you.
The pain of losing loved ones, livelihoods, cultural treasures, and places of belonging cannot be measured. Yet we wish you to know that your grief is not borne alone.
From Cape Town to Cairo, from Dakar to Dar es Salaam, and from all over the world where people of African extractiong live, millions of African and African Diasporic hearts are united with yours in sorrow and sympathy.
The rivers and mountains that shape our respective lands remind us that humanity is interconnected beyond geography, language, and nationality”
The statement further emphasized the fact that Africa knows too well the trials brought by floods, droughts, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
“Our peoples have learned that even amid the darkest moments, the human spirit possesses an extraordinary capacity to endure, rebuild, and hope. It is this shared experience of resilience that strengthens our bond with you today”.
PAWA paid tribute to the courage of rescue workers, healthcare personnel, monks, nuns, community leaders, volunteers, and ordinary citizens who have risked their own safety to save lives and comfort the afflicted.
The association also honored the memory of those whose lives were lost.
“As writers, we believe that stories can build bridges where disasters create divisions. We therefore pledge to continue amplifying the voice”.
